Love It Or Leave It

I was driving home from work yesterday when I found myself behind a black van. On it was a bumper sticker which read, “America: Love it or leave it.”

Reminiscent of the George W. Bush years, I found myself thinking that this type of mentality only finds its way into public when intolerance is king. It’s my way or fuck off. And the crazy thing is that it’s not like tolerance was king during the Obama years.

Drone bombings, a medical insurance plan written by the pharmaceutical companies, a bailout of corporations, and eight years of very little social change.

But Obama sounded good while moving the needle to the right even more.

And, by the way, I’m not sure if the driver of the black van has been paying attention, but there’s not a ton to love. Honestly. Regardless of which of the binary decisions our country has convinced you to side with, there is very little going on which makes me say, this is the best country on this dying planet.

I know, I know, the planet is not dying. We will. The planet will recover. Something else will live here. We just do not deserve to inhabit it much longer.

Earth: Love it or leave it.

2020 is the year that nothing seems to be going right. We’ve lost our way. And it’s not political as much as it is fact. At least past administrations would have found a way to try to keep people safe. Not this one. Fuck ‘em all.

Ironically, and this is important, Trump came out and bragged about the economy not long ago. As if it is not in recovery but actually recovered. As if he did it.

This is hard for Americans to understand, but there are many unemployed people. They are not working, earning an income, and do not have health insurance. They could get sick and go in debt or simply die.

What has given this country the illusion of recovery is the money being sent to the unemployed each and every week. It has given them purchasing power. I’ve heard all the politicians say that these people don’t want to work again. They are making more not working than they were working.

What is the real problem?

Imagine how well the economy could do if we had provided a weekly check to all people. More to those who have worked through it.

Imagine if we increased the purchasing power of everybody so they made enough to help the economy all the time.

We have learned nothing in 40 years of trickle down. Nothing. And the funds have been cut off. We can give no more to the wealthy- even though they demand it- and we should accept this intolerance no longer.

This country is being exposed as racist.

This country is being exposed as corrupt.

This country is being exposed as indifferent to its people.

This country has an economy which grew rapidly because of slavery.

They chanted, no taxation without representation, but corporations don’t pay taxes and receive all the representation.

I find it interesting that the love it or leave it crowd weren’t saying the same things when Obama was president. They were not saying the same things when Clinton was getting a blowjob.

Love the blowjob or leave it.

We have a Vice President who will not acknowledge the LGBTQ community. This administration has rolled back protections granted so that everybody has rights.

Love toxic masculinity or leave it. We are all cowboys.

Just today the President tweeted a video of an old man yelling “white power” on twitter.

Love it or leave it motherfucker.

But the European Union wants to keep Americans out because of our mishandling of COVID19.

We live in a police state.

We live in a country which defends the gun lobby.

Love mass shootings or leave the country snowflake.

And Trump is golfing with Lindsay Graham because all he really cares about is being worshipped.

I’m tired. And this is the fourth economic downturn I’ve lived through. I’ve been told that there will be no raises this year. Because they don’t understand.

I do understand the importance of profit, but we are failing people every single time we hold them back. And that’s the one thing America has never been: for the people. Not all of them.

We rewrite history, regularly, to hide the mistreatment of people. We never learn from the past.

This masochist population waving their flags and banners because we prefer certain sadists over others. Nobody waves more MAGA flags than the poor people in my redneck town.

I spent a good two miles behind that black van thinking of a time when W. Bush actually said those words. Thinking of people I know right now who would say those words and mean it.

Love it or leave it.

Basically, never be better.

It’s so sad. How little we seem to care about one another. How little we are willing to give.

I applied for a promotion recently. I was issued a test to take to determine what kind of leader I am. The report came back I am fair. It said I give to others and trust in them. It means short leash, but I empower those who work for me.

There is no fucking way I am getting that job.

Not in America.

Love it or leave it.
